Exterior mirrors designed for aerodynamic efficiency and demand-driven shutters on the inside of the radiator shroud (4- and 6-cylinder models except E 350 BlueTEC) improve the aerodynamics and thus optimise fuel consumption.

The ECO display in the instrument cluster provides information on the efficiency of the driver's style as a way to motivate the driver to reduce consumption by adapting a more fuel-efficient driving style.

The ECO start/stop function reduces fuel consumption and emissions by switching off the engine automatically when the car comes to a stop (e.g. in traffic jams or at traffic lights).

Vehicles equipped with the ECO start/stop function possess a starter/generator in place of the starter. Intelligent control electronics allow the starter/generator to supply the electrical energy for the vehicle's electrical system and, in starter mode, the torque required to start the engine.

Significant savings can also come from a series of small contributions. With the aim of making the new E-Class Coupé more fuel efficient, the Mercedes-Benz engineers examined all main components with regard to their energy usage and found ways of getting them to work even more economically.

The current BlueDIRECT V6 and V8 engine generation includes measures such as downsizing, petrol direct injection and a turbocharger (E 400 and E 500) for a fast response. Innovative engine technology makes it possible to reduce emissions and fuel consumption further compared with previous models.

BlueTEC catalytic converter technology uses the reactant AdBlue® to purify exhaust gases. This makes it possible to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 90 per cent. This world's cleanest diesel technology to date already complies with the requirements of the future Euro 6 emissions standards.
